From Values to Passion: The Connection between Scrum's Five Values and Passion
Passion and the Scrum Values are the driving force behind high performing teams.
While passion can be a powerful motivator, it is not typically classified as a value. Rather, passion is often regarded as an emotion or feeling that drives our interests, desires, and motivations. However, passion can be a crucial factor in enabling individuals and teams to embody and exhibit other values that are important for success in various areas of life, including product development. The five scrum values play a part and exhibited in passion:
Courage: Pursuing a passion often requires taking risks and stepping outside of one's comfort zone. It takes courage to push through fears and doubts, to face challenges head-on, and to persevere in the face of adversity. Passionate individuals are often seen as courageous because they are willing to take on challenges and go after what they truly desire.
Focus: When you are passionate about something, you tend to be highly focused and driven to achieve your goals. Passionate individuals know what they want and have a clear vision of where they want to go. They are able to concentrate their efforts on the things that matter most, staying focused on their objectives and minimizing distractions along the way.
Commitment: Passionate individuals are highly committed to their goals and are willing to put in the time and effort required to achieve them. They understand that success often requires sacrifice, and they are willing to make those sacrifices to pursue their passions. Commitment to one's passions is also a reflection of their character and integrity.
Openness: Passionate individuals tend to be open-minded and receptive to new ideas and experiences. They are curious and eager to learn, always seeking to expand their knowledge and understanding. Passionate individuals are often willing to explore different paths and take on new challenges, which requires openness to the unknown.
Respect: Passionate individuals also tend to have a high degree of respect for themselves, for others, and for the world around them. They understand the value of diversity and inclusivity and are committed to treating others with kindness, compassion, and empathy. They are also respectful of the resources and environment they work in, and they take care to leave a positive impact on the world around them.
Over the years, I have hired many people, and one trait that I always seek is passion. Passionate individuals take ownership and are more likely to bring a sense of purpose and direction to their work. As a leader, nothing is better than having someone on your team who is enthusiastic and passionate about what they do. Passionate team members tend to be more engaged and motivated, and they are more likely to go above and beyond to achieve their goals. This sense of ownership and commitment is essential for building strong teams that can deliver high-quality products and services. Ultimately, a team that is passionate about what they do is better positioned to meet the needs of their customers and achieve success in their endeavours.
